Beach Commissioner Mike Cahillane Provides Further Guidance on Beach Usage

Sat, Jun 6 at 1:03 PM MSA COVID-19 Beach Safety Rules As a follow up to the email sent this morning by Secretary Ed Shea, there are a few points of clarification. As a board, we believe that education of the current state and local guidelines is the best way to ensure that we all have a safe and fun summer.

On May 18, 2020, the Massachusetts Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs issued “Beach Guidelines for Managers” as part of the safety and re-opening standards for the management and use of coastal and inland beaches in the Commonwealth for Phase 1 of the Commonwealth’s reopening.

The Guidelines apply to ALL inland and coastal beaches unless otherwise specified.

Under the Massachusetts Bureau of Environmental Health, the MSA Beach falls under the definition of a “Semi-Public Beach, which means, “any bathing beach that has common access and or common use by a group or organization, which can be a bathing beach associated with a hotel, condominium, or neighborhood association, summer camps, or a beach club.”

The picnic tables have been removed from the beach and placed upside down next to the shed. This was done because the Guidelines require sanitization to be performed between each use.

The trash can was removed from next to the shed to limit multiple people from using it. The Guidelines expect that visitors should adhere to a strict “carry in, carry out” policy and take waste with them.

The shed will be closed and locked on Saturday, June 13, 2020 to limit potential COVID-19 exposure to each other’s chairs, toys, umbrellas, or other personal items from people going in/out of the shed.

Current state Guidelines specify that organized ball games should not be allowed activity including, but not limited to, volleyball, Kan Jam, spikeball, football, soccer, Kadima, and bocce. As is it nearly impossible to engage in social distancing when two or more people are playing, we are asking that no beach or ball games take place on the beach.

To ensure that all dues paying members have access to the beach this year, we are also asking that members limit the numbers of guests they have to the beach this summer. In addition, we ask that any members who have rental properties (long or short-term) take responsibility to advise their tenants of the guidelines.

We are in in this together so we ask that any member who observes a rules violation to educate as to the Guidelines. If you are not comfortable in doing this, please contact or any Board Member for assistance.
